October 23, 2016
Today (Sunday) was not rainy as had been forecast.  Vic didn't feel like travel, so Alex and I set out in a southeasterly direction toward Nemirov -- famous for distilling Nemiroff Vodka:

But perhaps more important, we visited the palace of the Countess Mariya Shcherbatova in a beautiful park, where a wedding had just taken place. She was a great philanthropist, especially supporting education.

Very interesting to me was a billboard that I thought was an idyllic message about freedom for Ukraine.

But Alex explained that although свобода (Svoboda) means freedom, it is also the name of a right-leaning nationalistic political party. Sound familiar ?
On through Bratslav to Tulchin - 2 entrance signs -- important city:

Tulchin is a bustling city with much in the way of historic structures and commercial life.
The Potostky palace is spectacular, built in 1782, was originally the home of Stanislav Schensnyj (Feliks) Potostky (1751-1805), who later married and moved away! The palace was variously used for military purposes, a hospital, and a school of fine arts. The palace originally had two attached wings -- not pictured here -- (one is no longer attached).
Other Tulchin beautiful and some abandoned buildings and finally, a house in the Jewish neighborhood:

On the road back to Vinnitsa I bought a wonderful small spiral-bound road atlas of Ukraine with very detailed maps, just like the one Alex uses.  I'm very excited to have these maps and will make a good laminated composit from it for my desk.
A second wonderful dinner at Marani Georgian restaurant and a quick drive-by to check parking at the archive for tomorrow.  The archive by night -- great anticipation!
